The annual report constitutes a crucial communications tool for companies. A high-quality annual report combines vision, facts and outlooks and furnishes an accessible overview of the company’s core values and objectives for a diverse range of target groups. It is a crucial communications medium for shareholders, analysts and media and employees and other stakeholders.
Today annual reports are published in a growing number of formats. They are produced in extensive and abridged versions, print and digital, online as PDF or HTML and as an app. Whatever the format, the content remains decisive for the quality of the report. SPJ has extensive experience in writing annual reports for (listed) companies. A number of annual reports that we have written have been nominated for the Sijthoff Award.
Written communications continue to play a crucially important role in reaching and convincing target groups. The related challenge is to speak to the target group in their own language. This requires using straightforward and understandable language whenever possible and details, nuances and technical language when necessary. Various factors determine the choice of a paper or digital format: ‘get’ or ‘bring’, current or background information and desired image. Digital affords more and more possibilities for making communications more attractive and informative by using interviews, clips and animations. Thanks to our experience in communications and knowledge of markets and sectors, we are able to assist our clients in the process of selecting the medium and format and to participate in planning and executing the actual production of the publication.
A position paper can function as a highly beneficial instrument for convincing the applicable target groups based on substantive arguments. This makes it possible to limit the social debate on complex and/or sensitive topics to the main issues. The related challenge is to deliver, within a short space of time, finalised proof for policymakers such as politicians who have very little time to peruse lengthy documents. Formulating a position paper is also an excellent exercise in pinpointing the organisation’s specific views and plans.
